About us
Animal Emergency and Urgent Care has been in operation since 1976. It has been and still is privately, locally owned. It has been owned by Dr. Ratliff since 1983 and transitioned from overnights, weekends, and holidays to 24/7 in 2009.
The doctors practice very high-quality emergency medicine, critical care, and surgery. The technical staff is dedicated, compassionate, and very hard-working. The CSRs are of the same cloth. Several staff members, doctors, and technical, have been with AEUC for 10-20 years.
The clientele is from all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds. They all have one thing in common. They love their pets. We see dogs and cats from an approximately 100-mile radius, with a wide variety of case types, from trauma to toxicities, internal medicine to rattlesnake bites. Soft tissue emergency surgeries are performed by the doctors. The practice motto is “Your pet is never alone.”
I love how they didn’t turn me away. I was worried about my little guy Casper and even though they were at capacity they welcomed us. Of course, we were informed it would be an extremely long wait if Casper’s vitals were stable but that was not a problem for us. We did end up having to wait around 6 and a half hours but it was worth it! I do love how they inform you of the price range before doing any sort of diagnostics or treatments. The price was very reasonable too, I honestly thought I would be spending more but they got Casper diagnosed and got him on the treatment plan within an hour of being called back into a room. I will definitely be here again if the need arises again. Lovely lovely ladies! OH! another is they have coffee and snacks awaiting the guests. Thoughtful little gesture. Thank you AEUC! – Brittany Dailey – Local Guide
About this role
The type of person that will fit well into this position is compassionate toward all types of people, and patients and dedicated to providing high-quality medicine and soft tissue surgical skills. There is currently one doctor on duty per shift at this time, being comfortable with autonomy is important, however, we are all available to each other if there is a need for a second brain, or in some cases, hands, such as with surgeries. The common surgeries that we perform are trauma, c-section, pyometra, gdv, hemoabdomen, acute abdomen, cystotomy, gi foreign body and enucleation, to name a few.
About you
As stated above, compassion and patience are very important qualities to have in the emergency and intensive care setting. Communication skills are a must as the need to quickly explain complex conditions and prognosis often becomes necessary. Regard for your co-workers is another must, as we have to be there for one another. These are people skills, of course, good animal handling skills are a given.
Our location
Bakersfield is in the Central Valley of California where a large volume of the nation’s fresh fruit and nuts are grown. It is central to many different natural places to visit to enjoy what nature has to offer, such as the Sierras, giant Sequoias, the Mojave Desert, 2 hours to many beaches, and the entertainment-rich Southern California area. It is an easy 4-hour drive to Mammoth or Tahoe, 2 hours from Big Bear or Mountain High. The Pacific Crest Trail is nearby in several places, including only a few hours from the John Muir Wilderness and Yosemite. Bakersfield just completed its 36-mile-long bike path along the Kern River through the town and out through beautiful almond orchards. It is home to the Bakersfield Marathon, a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The Kern River provides lots of recreational opportunities, including fishing, both fly and bait, white water rafting, and kayaking. It has up to class 5 rapids along its length. Because of the good near year-round weather for outdoor sports, there are excellent venues for tennis, golf, and swimming.
There is an increasing millennial population that is transforming the downtown to walkable access to excellent dining, arts, and entertainment. There are local Farmer’s Markets every weekend downtown. All kinds of new things happening in the town and region.
