About us
Step inside Sage San Francisco and you’ll feel our positive, collaborative culture straight away. It shows in everything we do: exceptional medicine, attentive patient care and warm client service. Our hospital sits in San Francisco’s Mission District and partners with numerous animal shelter and rescue organizations in the neighborhoods around us. We’re committed to the growth and welfare of every colleague, and as part of Ethos Veterinary Health, your voice, growth and expertise count. Across the Ethos network of 140 specialty and emergency hospitals, mentorship runs both ways: you’ll share your expertise, learn from respected veterinary leaders and keep growing clinically, professionally and personally.
The care at SAGE San Francisco is unbeatable. The veterinary team has the kindest doctors and nurses and they have helped our dogs several times. I won’t bring them to any other ER. Special thanks to Dr Morrissey and Isabela for helping us with a recent scary experience. – Jessica Jewell – Google Review
About this role
You’ll join a curious, supportive ER team that works closely with criticalists, technicians and support staff to give every patient seamless, compassionate care. Workups move quickly with prompt specialist input, and with rotating interns on the team, you’ll teach and learn alongside them every day.
Your caseload is diverse companion animal emergency and critical care, with a balanced mix of:
- Receiving new emergency cases and triaging incoming patients
- Evaluating, diagnosing and building treatment plans for urgent and emergent conditions
- Performing emergency procedures and stabilizing critically ill or injured patients using evidence-based medicine
- Managing hospitalized patients through their course of treatment
- Communicating clearly and with empathy with pet owners during stressful, emotional moments
We’re seeking full-time or part-time experienced emergency veterinarians. Full-time doctors work 10 to 12 shifts a month and part-time doctors 6 to 9, on a balanced rotation of day, swing and overnight shifts. If you like overnights, an overnight-exclusive ER role is an option, with a higher salary and bonus structure. You can also pick up open shifts across all 5 SAGE ER and specialty hospitals, each within a 45-minute drive across the Bay Area, for added flexible income.
About you
You thrive in a fast-paced ER and enjoy being part of a team built on collaboration, mentorship and continuous learning. You make sound clinical decisions with confidence, and you bring warmth and clarity to every conversation with a worried pet owner.
- A collaborative mindset and commitment to exceptional patient care
- Strong communication skills with a compassionate, client-centered approach
- A passion for continuous learning, teamwork and advancing emergency veterinary medicine
- Confidence managing emergency cases in a fast-paced environment
- Completion of a rotating internship, or 3+ years practicing emergency medicine
- DVM or equivalent veterinary degree, with eligibility for state veterinary licensure
Our location
Our hospital is in the Mission District, where the surrounding neighborhoods blend creative makers industries, a rich arts scene, LGBTQIA+ culture and safe, walkable, bike-able, family-focused streets. You’re close to the epicenter of San Francisco’s technology and AI development, and to the many shelter and rescue organizations we partner with. Beyond the Mission, San Francisco offers cultural diversity, iconic landmarks, a bustling culinary scene, distinctive neighborhoods and exceptional weather, all set against breathtaking Bay views.
Our offer
