About us
ARH Essendon Fields is a multi-disciplinary specialist hospital built around a simple conviction: that exceptional medicine and a well-designed working life aren’t mutually exclusive. As part of one of the country’s largest specialist and emergency networks, we give our clinicians the peer community, resources, and case breadth that make specialty practice genuinely rewarding.
Inside our walls, the culture is built around professional respect, real synchronisation between departments, and leadership that invests in your day-to-day experience. We believe specialists do their best work when their time is respected, their clinical judgement is trusted, and their life outside the hospital is intact. That belief shapes everything, from how we roster to how we run a case.
My 5 year old dachshund required immediate IVDD surgery. I was very anxious about this and everyone at the ARH were so incredibly caring. The vet was informative and clearly stated the possible options, as well as requirements needed to support his recovery. I also really appreciate the regular check ins on how my dog was feeling post op. I would highly recommend ARH to anyone in need of pet surgery – Lauen B – Google Review
About this role
This is an internal medicine role with the caseload diversity, diagnostic firepower, and interdepartmental collaboration that specialty work should feel like. You’ll join three internal medicine specialists and a team of experienced nurses, with MRI, CT, ultrasound, C-arm fluoroscopy, a chemotherapy suite, and endoscopy available for the cases that call for them.
Collaboration is built into how we operate: surgery, oncology, critical care, and imaging are all in the building, and case discussions happen organically across departments. On-call requirements are rare and limited to advice only, and weekend work isn’t part of the role. The structure is deliberate. We’ve designed the week so you can do this work for the long haul, not just the next two years.
About you
You’re a specialist who takes the work seriously without losing the curiosity that brought you into internal medicine in the first place. You enjoy working a case through with peers, value clear communication with referring vets and owners, and contribute to a team that respects each other’s clinical judgement. You want a role where the medicine is sophisticated, the caseload keeps you thinking, and the working week is genuinely sustainable.
Formal requirements: registered specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, either Fellow (ANZCVS) or Diplomate (ACVIM or ECVIM). We also welcome applications from candidates who have completed residency training and are preparing for board examinations.
